Θεοτόκος. “God-bearer.” The title of the Virgin Mary affirmed at the Council of Ephesus (431); held in common by both Eastern and Oriental Orthodox. A Christological confession before it is a Marian one — she bore not a god-bearing man but the one Lord in the flesh.
