Coonan Cross Oath

(1653)  An oath taken by the Malankara St. Thomas Christians of Kerala asserting their independence from Portuguese-imposed Catholic jurisdiction. From this event the Malankara tradition eventually received hierarchical succession from the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and entered the Oriental Orthodox communion.
